It was the Day of Pentecost…
Fifty days earlier, God raised Jesus from the dead. But on the Day of Pentecost, it was announced that Jesus had now been exalted to the place of highest honor in heaven, at God’s right hand. And God the Father, just as He promised, gave Jesus the Son, the Holy Spirit to pour out upon all that the people in attendance saw and heard that day (Acts 2:32-33).
† When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.
Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
Acts 2:1-4 NKJV
Jewish people from all over the known world were there. Completely shocked, they heard Jesus’ disciples praising God and declaring His mighty acts in the languages of the countries where they had been residing. What was coming out of the mouths of Jesus’ disciples were things they should not have been able to speak.
But something significant happened. Jesus entered into His glory and now was exalted to the place of highest honor in heaven, at God’s right hand. It was like heaven took a DIVINE BREATH and breathed upon those disciples who were told to wait in the city of Jerusalem until they were endued with power from on high.
The Holy Spirit was poured out upon Jesus’ disciples!
The Holy Spirit filled their lungs and springs of living water began to flow from their hearts, welling up in praise and thanksgiving in languages they did not know, as the Holy Spirit gave them utterance.
The Jewish people who would have traveled from other countries to be in Jerusalem on that day for the Feast of Pentecost, came to celebrate the giving of the Law to Moses on Mount Sinai. But instead, they witnessed the outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon His people.
While the Law spoke of God’s commandments for the people of Israel, the Holy Spirit enabled Jesus’ disciples to proclaim God’s mighty acts for ALL people!
Fully Present and Fully Alive
From that point on, not only would the Holy Spirit be fully present within His people—now the Church—He would also be fully alive working through them in order for the whole world to know that Jesus is not dead, but alive and still ministering in the world today!!
Let this prayer of blessing, be yours today:
May the Spirit who was in Christ be in us, enabling us to know God’s will and empowering us to do God’s will. In the name and Spirit of Christ, we pray. Amen!
